Who's Responsible for This and Why?
This website is an act of rebellion. It really is. I created this site because I loathe the current state of the Internet and I want my own home on the web just for sharing my interest in photography. For sharing photos and thoughts without ads or algorithms.
Here's the thing. At this point in history, the Internet sucks. It's bad. It's very bad. I mean, what even is the "Internet" today? It's Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and TikTok. How the hell did that happen? The internet used to be a fun place made up of weird, quirky, fun websites. Thousands of people had their own property on the web and posted interesting things. There was individualism. Now, we get what Meta, Google and whoever the hell owns TikTok says we get. They create the trends. We follow the trends.
For photographers, the current situation is especially bad. Imagine buying a $3000 camera, taking amazing photos, spending hours editing those 40 megapixel images only to have them seen on a tiny, tiny little screen for .4 seconds in between ads for some schumck's preset pack or PDF posing guide. That's where we are.
Sure, there's a handful of photo centric websites for sharing large images like Flickr, 500px and Glass, but they are all in a state of passing hands in ownership, changing business models and at risk of being shut down at any time. Some great work has been done there, but there's always a catch.
If you like seeing photos, photography discussion and ad-free, algorithm-free, AI-free experiences, welcome to my website 👋. I'm Don.
